The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set was released in September of 2009 it immediately became the standard for The Beatles catalog. These remastered versions sound far better than the old CDs from the 1980s. When a listener compares the remastered CDs to the older discs it’s like the old discs are under a pile of wet towels while the new discs sound crystal clear so that all of the instrumentation and vocals push through the mix like never before.
The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set isn’t the only Beatles box set released in ‘09 but it has been the biggest seller because it can be appreciated by the biggest set of Beatles fans. The Beatles in Mono Box Set is amazing too but it appeals mostly to hardcore fans who need to hear the mono mixes (and compare them to the stereo mixes) than to the average Beatles fan. While I will agree with the “purists” that there are some songs that sound better in mono than in stereo (particularly some of the pre Magical Mystery Tour recordings in my opinion) overall I think the stereo box set does sound best.
The great thing about The Beatles in Stereo is that it lets you to buy The Beatles entire 1960s discography with just one order and considering the extremely high quality of all of their LPs, it makes sense to buy al of the albums at one time instead of purchasing some and then getting more later.
As well as the fantastic ground breaking music included in this box set there are also some groovy visual elements, most obviously the DVD with 13 mini documentaries on it (one for each studio album.) Along with this mini documentary DVD there are extended liner notes for each CD (there is some interesting stuff in these notes, particularly for fans that are new to The Beatles) and some interesting previously unpublished photographs.
I’m such a big Beatles lover that I have got (or I plan on purchasing) The Beatles in Stereo Box, The Beatles in Mono Box Set, The Beatles USB, and The Beatles Rock Band Video Game. But if I had to choose only one of these items, it would be the comprehensive stereo box set because it is the best hear their legendary albums and after all, it is their music that made them the most legendary band of all time.

In The late ’80s the music of the most popular band of all time was first made available in the CD format but unfortunately the best job wasn’t done on the mastering of those CDs and also unfortunately only the stereo mixes were available for most of the albums released.
The first problem was the mastering. Digital mastering at that time was still in it’s infancy. The technology and the knowledge on how to get the best sound CD release has significantly progressed since then. Mastering in the ’80s was done in only 16bit but now it is done in 24bit which is a big reason for the increase in sound quality.
But the lack of mono versions of The Beatles albums was also a big problem for a lot of fans who either grew up with those mixes or who were curious to hear them.
With the 2009 remasters, these problems have been solved. Both stereo and mono mixes of The Beatles timeless albums are currently available and they are both digitally remastered beautifully in such a way that allows the music to soudn better than ever.
The Beatles USB
This Beatles USB is basically a digital version of The Beatles in Stereo Box Set. Along with the more well known mp3 files, it also includes super high quality 24bit FLAC files. Along with the audio files, this USB stick also contains the visual elements from the stereo box set such as the thirteen mini documentaries, the extensive liner notes, and the unpublished photographs.
The Beatles USB memory stick is compatible with both Mac and Windows computers. The mp3s should work with no problems with your mp3 player (whether you own a Zune, an iPod, or a generic mp3 player.)
The Beatles Mono CD Box Set
The release that has created the most excitement of really big Beatles fans is probably the mono box set because it’s the first time that the original mono mixes have ever been released on CD.
Many “purist” Beatles fans believe that these mono mixes were really the way the band’s music was meant to be heard and the purists have a good reason for believing that. It was the mono mixes that most people listened to back in the 1960s and it was the mono mixes that the band and it’s producers spent the most time perfecting. It really wasn’t until around 1968 that The Beatles started to take their stereo mixes seriously.
Remastered Beatles in Stereo Box Set
2009’s most popular Beatles release has been this awesome box set. It’s been an enormous seller and for a very good reason. It contains the band’s complete ‘62-’70 catalog in brilliantly digitally remastered stereo. These remastered Beatles songs sound absolutely spectacular (these CDs are far better than the ‘87 Beatles discs you likely own now.)
The really big improvement compared to the old discs are heard in the way Paul’s bass guitar blasts through the mix more so than ever before and Ringo’s drums sound far better too. I also love how the vocals sound, now I can hear each harmony part distinctly.
